Rotate your crops by diversifying your collecting interests in antique silver
If you have a diversity of collecting interests, you have the ability to avoid one category when it really heats up and focus on a category that is showing weakness. It only takes a handful of a few crazy collectors that are over paying to ruin the market for a little while till they acquire what they are wanting. Just like any other industry the collectibles resale market experiences trends where things can be really strong and good and then there are times when things are really really slow and things are much more affordable.
As a collector, it is ideal if you jump into a buying mode on a collectibles category when the market for a particular category is soft. If you are only limited to just one category, then you will tend to pay more because if you are always buying, then you will be hitting both the highs and the lows. However, if you have a plethora of categories that you collect, you can avoid the ones that are super heated and focus your buying on ones that are showing weakness where its a buyers' market and not a sellers' market.
Not every category has extreme ups and down and some categories are on an unseemingly upward trend with no signs of ever having a corrrection or down turn. Tiffany & Co. and George W. Shiebler sterling silver are examples of these, and as a collector of permanently upwardly trending categories, you just have to accept that playing field. However, other antique silver categories like Gorham Martele Silver and old English Georgian Silver in recent years have seen extreme gyrations in marketplace demand and supply. With categories that show market fluctuations there are defintely cyclical opportunities for a shrewd collector to grab some bargains when the market is flatter rather than robust.
There is also macro-economic buying opportunity as well when the world has an economic crisis. Under these circumstances all categories across the board tend to be weak as the rich and powerful are forced to sell off their high end collectibles to pay for margin calls or upside down real estate deals and other bad investments. If you are lucky to have a good cash position in a time where most others are hurting, you are in a very powerful position to scoop up some real bargains in whatever collectibles category you want, especially if it's a category that was showing some downward trending in the first place. These windows tend to be pretty narrow so as a collector, try to have a little bit of reserve money on hand at all times in anticipation of an eventually too good to be true buying opportunity.
Conclusion: If you collect multiple categories of antique silver or other collectibles categories, you'll have the option to hold off on one for a while until it cools and then pursue more fertile grounds where another category is dropping off a bit in its demand where some good deals can be picked up.

Please Sell Your Silver to: The Silver Museum LLC
We know you have many selling options out there even including the auctions. However, never hurts to get more than one opinion on your valuable antique silver items. We also specialize in buying large extensive collections of rare and valuable silver items. Plus, sometimes if you have a collection that includes many smaller items it may not always the most optimal choice and not as worth while in consigning these smaller items to larger auction houses. The larger auction houses are likely not going to feature an item worth only $100-$200 in their printed catalogs.
We will buy all your items including pieces only worth a few dollars on up to larger items worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. We also want it all including your scrap silver pieces. We would love to be your one stop shop in selling all of your silver!
We'll also still take your crumbs if you still decide to consign your better items at auction - LOL. Give us a try, you won't regret it! We've been around for decades and are always fair and competive as well as easy to get along with.
The Silver Museum LLC wants to purchase silver pieces like the ones shown above!
We can often pay more than you would net at auction.
